Revised plans have been put forward for a new Minehead housing development next door to a site which is currently under construction.
Three sites to the south of the A39 Hopcott Road in Minehead are identified within the West Somerset Local Plan, which was expected to deliver more than 150 homes between them by 2032.
Construction is currently under way on a development by Stratton Land Ltd of 69 homes to the east of Bracken Lodge, which is being partially funded through a £5.7m loan from investment firm CrowdProperty.
Andrew Townsend has now submitted revised plans for 60 homes on the neighbouring site to the west, having secured outline planning permission from Somerset West and Taunton Council in September 2021.
The site lies between the junctions with Cher and Hopcott Close, on the main road leading to Porlock and the Exmoor National Park.
An existing farm track opposite the junction with Cher will not be used, with a new access road being installed to the west and ending near the existing telecommunications mast.
Mr Townsend has not specified how many of the new homes within the site will be affordable, but he has promised to provide 162 car parking spaces along the snaking estate road.
A spokesman for CSA Environmental (representing Mr. Townsend) said: “Careful consideration has been given to creating a sustainable extension to Minehead, forming a layout that is sensitive to and integrates with the surrounding landscape and built environment, with a focus on working with the challenging topography to provide an accessible scheme.
“The resulting layout economically utilises available space within the site, providing the opportunity for the site to accommodate up to 60 new homes alongside new areas of public open space – the benefits of which can be enjoyed not only by the residents, but also the wider community.”
The NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board has not formally requested any additional funding for Minehead Medical Centre on Irnham Road; however, it did reserve its right to “re-assess and respond” at a future date.
Somerset Council is expected to make a final decision on the proposals before the end of the year.
