A massive clear-up continued today (Monday) in West Somerset after the havoc caused by storms Eunice and Franklin, but several villages are still without water and power, roads blocked by fallen trees and damage reported on the West Somerset Railway.
Since Friday, Somerset County Council teams have dealt with 242 of the 258 fallen trees on the county’s roads, including several on the A396 Wheddon Cross-Dunster road.
Three of the four barriers at the new £1 million Seaward Way railway crossing in Minehead were badly damaged by Storm Eunice and other damage on the West Somerset Railway included a tree on the line at Crowcombe Heathfield station.
Kilve was without power for three days. Free meals for affected residents were provided at the weekend by the Hood Arms. Large areas of West Somerset, including Dunster, Carhampton, Williton, Watchet and parts of Minehead, were without electricity for several hours.
A sheep shed was demolished at Sanctuary Farm, Dulverton, tiles ripped from roofs and a greenhouse destroyed. Two trees were also blown down at Tropiquaria Zoo, Washford, but nearby wallabies and emus escaped unhurt.
Some homes in Porlock and Wiveliscombe are still without electricity.
