MINEHEAD Brownies kicked off their latest project to earn a new badge by meeting the Mayor of Minehead Jean Parbrook and Somerset County Council chairman Cllr Christine Lawrence.
The Brownies are setting themselves the challenge of reviewing the area of Minehead to see what they like about it and what they think could be improved.
Armed with cameras, they will take pictures and suggest some practical projects they think they could take on to improve their community.
They will helped by their Brownie leaders, the Rev Tina Macdonald and lay volunteer Lynne Wooldridge, and maybe some of their parents.
The Brownies met the mayor and chairman at their base in Minehead Methodist Church and were keen to know how they had become involved in local council roles to improve their community.
Cllr Parbrook had been a Brownie herself and said she had never forgotten the Brownie motto to “be prepared” and the promise to “do my best”.
Cllr Lawrence said her mother taught her the importance of doing her best and of trying to make a difference.
Minehead Brownie’ last project undertaken for their ‘Discovering the Faith’ badge was a huge success – they raised enough money to send two worm composting containers to Bangladesh.
The money, raised at the Christian Aid Rainbow Fair last May, will help improve soil so that families can grow more food and sell some of it to help educate their children.
Cllrs Parbrook and Lawrence promised to help the Brownies by ensuring that they knew whose permission they would need to undertake work in different places and who might help them with any resources they might need.
The Brownies aim to complete their improvements during half-term and will celebrate what they have achieved at a special service in Minehead Methodist Church on Sunday October 30.
And they will be awarded their new ‘Minehead Brownies Love Minehead’ badges during the services when they will share all they saw to celebrate as well as the areas they identified for improvement.
