ONCE described as ‘the best beach hut in the world’, the 86-year-old Salad Days chalet at Dunster Beach is for sale with a price tag of around £230,000 - more than the average house price in Wales.

It was last on the market two years ago for £160,000.

Data from the Land Registry reveals that the average house price in Wales is currently £213,400.

The asking price for the Salad Days chalet is also higher than that of more than 20 houses currently on the market in West Somerset.

Two other luxury beach huts on the private 230-chalet site have also been put on the market, for £249,000 and £220,000, respectively.

All three chalets will be sold through Dunster Beach Holidays Ltd, which manages the site.

Times have changed since the first chalets were built alongside Dunster Beach by the Luttrell family in the 1920s and could be rented for £3 a year.

Now, holiday lets range from £450 to £700 a week for up to four visitors.

Thought to be England’s first five-star beach hut, Salad Days was massively refurbished in 2015, and won numerous awards, including self-catering business of the year in South West England, and dog-friendly business of the year.

The Salad Days chalet overlooks the site’s Hawn lake and has underfloor heating, an en-suite shower, a fully-equipped kitchen, a lounge with white leather furniture, and front and back gardens with seating and sun loungers.

Chalet 21, on the market for £220,000, is beachside, with uninterrupted views of the sea and the Welsh coastline.

It has front and rear patios, a double bedroom, lounge, modern kitchen, shower-room and electrically-operated security shutters.

A spokesman for the vendors said: “Beautifully decorated and designed, this chalet is being sold with all contents and ready to move into, either for personal use or as a very marketable holiday letting option.”

Chalet 88 also faces the beach and has views of the sea, the lake, and the countryside.

A well-maintained original wooden seaside chalet, it is double-glazed with a patio facing the beach.

The property includes a modern kitchen and shower room, a separate double bedroom, a lounge with doors opening onto the patio with views of the beach, and a bed settee.

The chalet will be sold with all fixtures and fittings and offers of around £249,000 have been invited.

The Dunster Beach chalets are not the UK’s most expensive beach huts.

That title goes to five wooden cabins on the beach at Mudeford Spit, Christchurch, Dorset, which are up for sale for a total of £2.1 million despite not having any toilets, running water, or mains electricity.
