THE Brewhouse Theatre has issued a statement as it faces an uncertain future with significant cuts to funding announced next year.

Last week, Somerset Council announced that it would cut all of its funding to the Taunton theatre by April 2025.

The arts venue released a statement to address concerns raised regarding its future.

The statement said: “The theatre can confirm that it is working closely with both Somerset Council and Taunton Town Council to develop a plan that supports the long-term sustainability of the venue.

“Advance ticket monies are held in savings accounts, thus earning interest for the charity as well as offering assurance.

“In the meantime, shows are already booked into the theatre throughout 2025 and 2026, with Taunton Brewhouse continuing to provide a broad programme of live events, cinema, activities and exhibitions, with the theatre’s café and bar playing an increasing role.

“Taunton Brewhouse appreciates the support and enthusiasm of its friends and patrons and remains committed to serving as a cultural hub and vibrant part of the local community.”

According to Somerset Council plans, £13,000 will be cut from the grant provided this financial year and a further £119,000 in 2025/26.

The council has pledged to ensure a secure future for the venue with the help of Taunton Town Council and the charity managing the theatre.

Val Hammond, chair of the board of Taunton Theatre Association Ltd, said: “Whilst work on the detailed arrangements is ongoing, the Board of Taunton Theatre Association believes that the outcome will see a secure future for Taunton Brewhouse, enabling it to continue to serve the community for many years to come.”

Taunton Brewhouse went through a process of rebranding in 2021 with funding support from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund and the Garfield Weston Foundation’s Weston Culture Fund.

Recent cuts to the theatre’s funding come alongside upgrades to the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil, with an expected cost of £15m, and to the Bridgwater Arts Centre.

The Taunton Brewhouse team are working to ensure lasting sustainability and with promising projects in the pipeline, staff are reassured by their hope for record numbers for this year’s Christmas show, Pinocchio.
