ATWEST, West Somerset’s community transport charity, is appealing to anyone with free time to become a voluntary car driver taking patients to medical appointments when the service resumes in the spring.
“To many, these appointments are vital, with little or no alternative,” says Atwest spokesperson Barbara Middleton.
“Going to hospital and other medical appointments formed 98 per cent of our journeys and local people were so relieved not to have the worry of going to Bristol, Exeter, or further afield, by using our car scheme.”
She added: “When Covid struck, the car schemes were temporarily stopped. Only very few drivers were able to resume so new volunteer drivers are desperately needed.
“Volunteers are reimbursed for the miles driven, at a Government-approved mileage rate which covers fuel and vehicle costs.
“If you are interested in becoming part of our community car scheme, please give us a ring.
"You will not only be helping the local community, but will find it is very rewarding, too.”
