DANESFIELD School in Williton entered two teams into the Exmoor Youth Challenge recently.
Each team followed a 16-mile route across the moorland which was unmarked and following instructions and using map-reading and compass skills were essential.
Along the route were a series of checkpoints and each leg was completed in a pre-determined time.
A number of points were deducted from teams who arrived either too early or too late and competitors who were tired lagging behind much were pulled out of the challenge.
Both Danesfield School teams successfully completed the event and were presented with medals.
Not only did Team One complete the challenge, but they stopped to help another team’s member, giving them their emergency ration, and sending two of their own team to get help at the next checkpoint.
Devin Vaughan, the teacher organising the teams, said: “We are so proud of our pupils who took part.
“They were praised for their smart thinking and Team One gave up their chance to finish in a good time to help someone they had never met. Thank you to everyone at the Rotary Club of Exmoor who made the event a success.”
