A driver is facing jail after he admitted causing the death of a popular Bridgwater women’s rugby player who was killed in a crash last month.
Luke Hawkes, aged 29, of Wadham Close, Bridgwater, pleaded guilty to causing the death by dangerous driving of Bethany Branson when he appeared at Taunton Crown Court.
He also admitted failing to provide a specimen of breath after the accident which happened at a junction of the A38 in Bridgwater at around 9.50 pm on November 9. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in the New Year.
Bethany, aged 19, who played for Bridgwater and Albion RFC, had been travelling with a friend in a white Citroen car when there was a four vehicle collision. She died at the scene. A second man was arrested following the incident and has been released under investigation.
Bethany’s parents Amy and Ben, the rugby club and teammates all paid tribute to her after he died. In a statement issued through Avon and Somerset police, the family said: “Today our hearts have been torn in two. Our beautiful, brave, and unbelievably special baby girl, Bethany, has been taken from us.
"She will always be so cherished and loved in our hearts and we know that she was loved by so many around her. Today, the world suddenly seems a much, much sadder place.”
The rugby club said Beth was "taken far too early" and are sent their condolences to Beth's family and friends.
Director of Rugby Geoff Sluman, said: "This is such incredibly sad news, She was always a lovely person and great team member and club person.
“She always walked around the place with a smile on her face even when, or I should say especially when, she was active on the rugby pitch with her teammates. My condolences go to Beth’s family and friends."
Her teammates paid tribute in a post on Facebook, which said: "It is with shock and great sadness that we have learned of the death of Beth Branson. She has been taken far too early at the age of 19 and the situation teaches us how unjust some situations are."
