Is there a general election on the horizon?

I note the increased contributions from our constituency MP Ian Liddell-Grainger in recent editions of the Free Press, for example on the importance of a speedy broadband for farmers and the overcrowding of the Minehead to Taunton bus caused by visitors to Butlin’s.

As a district councillor for Carhampton and Withycombe some 15 years ago, many locals constantly expressed the same concerns.

Indeed, following a night out in Bath in midsummer, my journey from Taunton station was horrendous. The bus was already full leaving the station, luggage on seats and in the aisle and very dangerously placed. Passengers standing anywhere and sitting dangerously on piles of luggage.

No further passengers were picked up en route, including a large number waiting at Watchet.

I then had several meetings with Butlin’s and the area manager at Taunton bus station and it was agreed that extra buses would be run on the days when there was a large turnover at Butlin’s.

Sadly, neither side kept to the agreement or made any attempt to implement it.

I predict a February election, as in 1974.

Peter Humber, Withycombe.
