STORM Bert caused extensive disruption across the South West over the weekend with some areas of the country still reeling from strong wind and heavy rain.
The Met Office has warned that “impacts from Storm Bert will continue to cause disruption today” with flood warnings and alerts still in place across Somerset.
Andy Page, Met Office chief meteorologist, said: “Impacts from Storm Bert will continue to cause disruption as we go through today, and multiple warnings are in place for wind and rain.
“While the risk of any snowfall has now diminished, rainfall will affect much of the UK today, in particular some southwestern parts of England and South Wales, but the heaviest rain will ease from these areas through the day.”
The Environment Agency said a flood warning is still in place for Washford River, West Somerset. The warning states: “Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Washford River, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around properties in Roadwater and roads in Kingsbridge.
“Rainfall has now generally moved out of the area although there is still the possibility of the occasional heavy shower during the remainder of Sunday and into Monday.”
Roads have been closed around Devon and Somerset due to the severe flooding and obstructions. The Norton Fitzwarren B3227 road towards Wiveliscombe remains closed due to a fallen tree which is blocking the route. Buses of Somerset service 25 will also be out of action today due to this road closure.
There have been warnings of dangerous flooding off M5 Junction 26 towards Chelston Roundabout, as well as the roundabout along the A38 at West Buckland Road between the nursing home and Moonbeams farm shop.
Wellington’s Hilly Head road was also closed over the weekend due to a fallen tree, disrupting entry and access to the town.
Nynehead Road was completely flooded by Sunday (November 24) morning but has now cleared and drivers are advised to proceed with caution.
On Sunday, locals reported damage caused by fallen sheet roofing on cars parked in the Ford garage next to the Morrisons in Minehead.
Train services continue to be impacted by the weather with cancellations of all trains between London Paddington and Penzance via Exeter St Davids and Plymouth until further notice.
Other routes may be suspended or provide reduced services due to flooding and fallen trees blocking access on the GWR network.
