Free Press reader Marion John (née Barrell) has identified some of the tennis players whose photo from the early 1960s appeared in last week’s paper.

Martin Stevens, of Watchet, dug out the pictures after reading a story on October 15 about a match between Wimbledon star Christine Truman and local champion Margaret Merson (Taylor) at the opening of Porlock Recreation Ground tennis courts.

He appealed for help in putting names to faces – and Marion has remembered three more of them, as well as recognising herself!

One of Martin’s photos was taken at Minehead Tennis Club and Martin could only name Helen Lovell, the fair-haired girl sitting on the ground.

But Marion, who is pictured second left in the middle, could identify Richard Phillet (second right, back row) – and her own bridesmaid, Ann Webb, sitting in front.

Martin’s other photo was taken on the steps of what was then Minehead Grammar School: “Many will recognise the girl on the bottom step (left) – the journalist and newsreader Anna Ford. I think her father was rector of Selworthy parish,” he said.

Marion, who could see Gill Perret standing behind Anna, said: “It came as a total surprise when I opened the paper and saw my picture from all those years ago.

“Helen Lovell died eight or nine years ago and I lost touch with Ann Webb ten or so years ago. There are others in the photos who look familiar but I can’t bring their names to mind.”
