Watchet Methodist Church celebrated its 150th anniversary in August with a joyous weekend of celebration.

An exhibition of the history of the church attracted lots of people, including many from Watchet who shared the memories the exhibits evoked.

Among them were the original 1869 document, Sunday School records dating back to 1845 – so the Sunday School is older than the church - and photos from the 1960s and ’70s.

On Saturday, August 21, there was an evening of entertainment with Watchet Community Choir singing Beatles songs, Dave Milton presenting Songs of the Sea, Glenys Chapman reading her own poetry, the Rev Brenton Prigge singing with his guitar and a finale provided by the West Somerset Brass Band.

On Sunday, August 22, the Rev Prigge led morning worship and sang his own songs with his guitar.

“It was lovely to see friends from around the Circuit for the afternoon service and afterwards to catch up with folk over tea”, said the Rev Jane Sperring, who cut the anniversary cake .

Memorabilia commemorating the anniversary in the form of mugs, postcards and cards were for sale.

Also available to buy is a of the history of the church written by Nick Cotton, which the Rev Sperring described as ‘an absolutely brilliantly interesting read’.

The church is now resuming its normal activities of coffee mornings, social events and 10.30am Sunday services. Details from the Rev Jane Sperring.
