Morrisons in Minehead have taken action to recover discarded trolleys after residents of the town complained.

A number of Morrisons trolleys have been spotted abandoned on the fringes of the supermarket's car park. Minehead resident Jacqui Boast, 64, photographed 3 trolleys in a gorge alongside the steam railway.

In a Facebook group for Minehead residents one member wrote: "It's so very sad. The trolleys are not cheap. Pity these people can't be caught and made to do community service."

Another user commented: "Cost will ultimately be reflected in the prices - and Morrisons are already struggling, they can't even afford to have lights on in the store anymore."

While another described the scene as "Modern art."

The Free Press spoke to Jacqui Boast about the discarded trolleys. She said: "I've tried ringing the Environment Agency, they aren't interested because it's not a river on their books. The council are not addressing it. The manager of Morrisons said he would get someone out to do it and that was on the weekend."

By the morning of the 14 of February, the trolleys had yet to be retrieved. The Free Press contacted Morrisons for comment. A spokesperson responded later in the day that: "A Morrisons colleague has walked the footpaths around the store today removed any abandoned trolley blocking pathways or the grass verges."

Mrs Boast also spotted abandoned trolleys near the Butlins resort. She speculated that they may have been left by holidaymakers ferrying their shopping between Morrisons and Butlins.

In a statement a spokesperson for Butlins said: "We understand the supermarket has confirmed they are recovering discarded trolleys from the local area. We’d be happy to work with them to arrange the collection of any close to resort."
