On February 24 it will have been one year since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Many Rotary clubs have responded with generosity to the ongoing crisis, and this month the Minehead Rotary Club are marking the one year anniversary of the war beginning.

Over the past 12 months Rotary Clubs across Great Britain and Ireland have donated over £6 million and given up more than 100,000 volunteer hours to support the Ukrainian people.

The impact of these efforts is said to range from the supply of life saving medical equipment, to rebuilding works, to welcoming Ukrainian guests to the UK.

Between July 2022 and December 2022 the Minehead Rotary Club received 26 applications for financial assistance from Ukrainian mothers with children, who had fled Ukraine and were being hosted in and around Minehead.

The applications were processed and thanks to help from the Rotary Foundation Ukraine Disaster Relief Fund the Minehead Club was able to give grants totalling £9,583.

The Minehead Rotary Club also bought and distributed Christmas presents to all the Ukrainian children in the Minehead area. Working with the West Somerset Food Cupboard, an emergency food service, the Minehead Rotary Club provided hampers to 7 Ukrainian families for Christmas.

The Minehead Rotary Club has made contact with the Rotary Club of Uzhgorod-Skala in Ukraine as part of its ongoing work, to explore what other assistance could be provided.

The Rotary Club of Minehead said: "The Rotary Club of Minehead continues to stand with the people of Ukraine and is committed to supporting the ongoing humanitarian crisis."
