THE latest in a season of exhibitions highlighting West Somerset artistic and creative talents opens at Watchet’s Mayfly Studio on Saturday (September 2) until September 10 and features the remarkable work of Courtney Higgins, of Peppermint Grove Prints, much of it based on the moon.
Courtney has been living in Watchet for nearly nine years and is originally from Australia, gaining a Bachelor of Creative Arts degree from the University of Wollongong, where she focused on sculpture and drawing.
She has always had ‘an innate desire to create and share stories’, and contemporary calligraphy particularly captured her imagination.
Courtney has been exploring the potential of ink-based mediums since her university days and has developed her techniques with this ancient craft, coupling it with her deep fascination with the moon.
She says of her work: “The synthesis of calligraphy and lunar art is a testament to the power of artistic serendipity.”
With her intricate hand-painted depictions of the moon coupled with her calligraphic skill, she creates some highly original, unique, and very personal work.
Courtney adds: “The process of creating bespoke moons representing specific dates comes to life as I paint each individual moon with inks that resonate with personal meaning.
“Watchet, although not a direct influence, has provided a nurturing backdrop for my artistic evolution.
“Having become immersed within the local community and beyond, I have fostered connections, resonating with individuals who appreciate the intimate touch of an original artwork.”
Courtney has accepted many commissions to transform personal stories into a tangible and enduring memento, whether it be a wedding, funeral, or other significant milestone based on conversations with clients.
As Courtney continues to explore new horizons, her distinct style, characterised by flowing abstraction and deliberate splatters of metallic inks, brings a vibrancy to every creation.
This exhibition showcases bespoke pieces, unique one-offs, abstract forms, and delicate watercolour florals which celebrate the beauty of individual narratives.
Gallery-owner Nick Cotton, who has organised the current series of successful exhibitions, said: “This is yet another exceptional experience for the Mayfly and an opportunity to meet Courtney and chat about her motivations, techniques, and her continuing artistic journey.”
The exhibition is open from 11 am to 4 pm in the Mayfly Studios, in Swain Street, Watchet.
