THE Department for Transport has confirmed plans to discuss concerns surrounding the management of Minehead Harbour, says MP Rachel Gilmour.

The Lib Dem MP for Tiverton and Minehead received a letter from the Mike Kane MP, Department for Transport Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, confirming officials will discuss the issues related to the current and historic management of Minehead Harbour.

It has been suggested to the Department of Transport there is alleged mismanagement of the harbour area that is leading to an array of public concerns, including that of safety for harbour users, together with the wasting of public funds.

Minehead Sailing Club, which had been active for over 60 years, were forced to halt all operations last year as Somerset Council increased fees for use of the harbour. Due to rising costs, the sailing club saw each of their members having to pay an additional £78 per year to use the harbour, as the slipway was chained-off by Somerset Council.

Following a campaign by the Sailing Club, Somerset Council has removed the chain until March 1. However, as per the notice provided, harbour charges and fees are still applicable during this period and must be paid prior to using the slipway.

Mrs Gilmour said: “Following correspondence with the Department for Transport, I am glad to hear that I will be able to discuss the issues related to the management of Minehead Harbour with government officials.

“I am fully committed to working on a resolution for the many concerns that have been conveyed to me and look forward to having constructive conversations with the Department for Transport on these concerning issues that are blighting harbour enjoyment for all.

“I hope there is a positive outcome soon so the people of Minehead can enjoy their harbour.”
