NATURE activities for all ages will be among highlights of a free “Fantastic Fungi and Lichens Event” to be based on Horner Woods near Minehead on Saturday, October 26.
Organised by Minehead and Coast Development Trust, Somerset Wildlife Trust and Exmoor National Park, the event is planned to celebrate nature with expert-led walks. There will also be a chance to explore Horner Farm’s monthly producers’ market in the farm’s community barn.
A spokesperson for the event said: “Visitors can look forward to a range of activities that highlight local wildlife with a focus on fungi and lichens, beautiful landscapes and conservation projects. From foraging walks to interactive sessions with local wildlife experts, this event has something for everyone.”
Under the guidance of Alison Beaven from Forest Catkins, visitors will explore seasonal foraging and make a hedgerow tea with their findings. Forest Catkins offers Craft Workshops and Forest School sessions for children, families and grown-ups. The hour-long family-friendly riverside walk will leave from Horner car park at 1.30pm.
Lucie Bennett, from Somerset Wildlife Trust, will provide insights into efforts to restore local wildlife populations including the Exmoor pine marten reintroduction programme.
Other highlights will include iNaturalist App activities and training, with West Somerset Wildways and Exmoor National Park staff, teaching participants how to record local wildlife on their devices.
Mushrooms will also come under the microscope during an in-depth look at fungi led by expert Mandy Wallington, and Somerset-based musician Martin Shiells will blend music with local wildlife themes.
There will be two guided fungi and lichen walks through Horner Woods at 11.15am and 2pm, offering a closer look at these fascinating organisms guided by experts from the British Lichenology Society and Exmoor National Park.
The morning walk is fully booked but there are a few remaining places for the afternoon event and for the foraging expedition. These can be booked by contacting somersetwildlife.org/events.
The spokesperson added: “Whether you’re an experienced nature-lover or simply curious about the beauty of the wonderful local countryside, this will be the perfect opportunity to unwind, learn something new and reconnect with the environment.”
