High tides pictured in Watchet on Tuesday, March 12
DRAMATIC pictures showed the moment high tides washed over Watchet’s sea wall amid a flood warning on Tuesday (March 12).
The images, which were taken by local resident Liz Elmont, showed water washing up the marina slipway and flooding streets.
The tides forced The Star Inn to close for lunch, after it was caught up in the flooding. The hide tides coincided with a bout of heavy rain.
It came after a wet start to march followed what was reportedly the wettest February on record in some areas of the UK.
On Wednesday, March 13, flood warnings and alerts remained in place along some parts of the West Somerset coast.
In guidance last updated on Tuesday the Environment Agency said residents should expect flooding at Porlock Wier on Wednesday morning between Gore Point and Hurlstone Point including Porlock Weir.
Residents in Minehead were told flooding remained possible and were advised to “consider activating any property flood protection products, and plan driving routes to coastal roads, which may be flooded.”
The Met Office is forecasting drier weather, with some rainy spells predicted toward the end of the week before giving way to overcast skies at the weekend.
