PORLOCK Country Fair attracted an unprecedented number of visitors to the Recreation Ground on Sunday (August 6).

There were even holidaymakers from San Francisco, Singapore, New Jersey, Canberra, Liverpool, Preston and Haverfordwest.

Held in near-perfect weather, the day saw a record number of stallholders and exhibitors playing host to.

The 59 dogs in the dog show was also a record, as was the number of children’s races.

This year’s arena attraction was the ancient art of falconry. There were eight birds on show comprising falcons, hawks and owls. The two flying demonstrations were carried out by Martin Simkins of North Devon Falconry based near Barnstaple, who had the large crowd enthralled. The feathered star was Susie the Harris hawk.

A selection of new cars provided by Beaver Ford of Minehead was augmented by the inclusion of two from their new range of MGs.

Old motorbikes on show included such nostalgic icons as Triumph, BSA, Royal Enfield, Ariel, Norton and Jawa.

Demonstrations of old craft skills like spinning and thatching were also on view, and the traditional Punch and Judy show attracted an audience from the very young to the fairly old.
