THE weather did its best to prevent the 2024 KS1 West Somerset Primary School Gymnastic Competition taking place, but despite a few extra challenges early on, the event took place, but unfortunately without a couple of schools who were unable to travel.

Six Schools from the local area competed in the West Somerset Primary School Gymnastic Competition held at Minehead First School on Thursday, November 21, and many thanks must go to them for once again allowing their school hall for this annual event to take place.

The six schools were invited to enter into a KS1 competition that included a short floor routine and two different types of springboard jumps.

Dunster First School who were third in the team competition

The gymnasts were in teams of six from each school and were judged and scored on their performance. The scores were then added together to create a team score. Teams were judged for third, second and first places and then there were three places for best overall individual performance.

The atmosphere inside the hall was buzzing and you could feel the excitement in the room this morning.

Gymnastics is quite an individual sport and so it can be the first time for many to perform in a individual competition.

It is very much aimed at grass root school children to give them an opportunity to have a go at something different in a relaxed but professional environment.

Organiser Suzanne Richards from Number 1 West Somerset said: “Once again we are delighted with the attendance this year, The standard of performance was really high, the scores were significantly higher than 12 months ago and there was only 0.1 between the top placements. All the children were extremely well behaved and a credit to their schools. We are so proud of all the children and how hard they worked to take part today.”

Children from the following schools attended the KS1 Gymnastics Competition - Old Cleeve, St Michaels C of E School, Minehead First School, Dunster First School, St Dubricius C of E School and Knights Templar School, Watchet.

At the end of the competition it was Minehead First School who won the team event, St Michaels C of E School were second and Dunster First School came third.

The winner of the individual performance competition was Nova from St Michaels, Hallie from Minehead First was second while Jessa from Dunster came third.

Very well done to everyone who took part, to all of the teachers at the schools who have worked with their pupils and to the organisers Number 1 West Somerset.
