Highways teams and contractors have been hard at work clearing snow from roads across Exmoor as West Somerset has been gripped by a big freeze expected to last all week.

Travel Somerset said the wintry showers overnight and through Saturday covered routes on high ground across the moor, including Wheddon Cross to Elworthy Cross, Wheddon Cross to Simonsbath, Exford, and Porlock Hill to the Devon border.

The Met Office has extended the area covered by a Yellow Warning for snow and ice to most of Somerset, in force until midday on Sunday.

The Exeter-based forecaster is predicting sub-zero overnight temperatures through the week for most of West Somerset.

Sunday was due to start with freezing fog and the area will struggle to rise above freezing, before plummeting overnight to minus 3C on higher ground with more freezing fog on the way early on Monday.

The Met Office Yellow Warning in force on Sunday morning says there is a risk of snowfall and disruption due to icy surfaces.

Meanwhile the UK Health Security Agency has also issued a level three cold weather alert covering England until Monday morning.

The NHS is warning that the cold snap could increase the health risk to vulnerable patients and disrupt services.

It is advising people to heat rooms in regular use to at least 18C, but the charity National Energy Action is warning people are facing a struggle to afford the high cost of energy.
