ALMOST 30 years after it was first placed on the former Watchet council offices, a commemorative plaque marking the town’s links with the RAF Regiment was rededicated at its new home at the Royal British Legion Club at a special ceremony.

Former civic leaders who had attended the original dedication in 1989 were among 100 visitors, local dignitaries and RAF Regiment Association members present.

They watched the town’s new Mayor, Cllr John Irven, unveil the plaque in the entrance of the Mill Lane club.

The plaque, originally presented by the RAF Regiment, celebrates nearly 20 years of important military work at RAF Watchet, which included signalling, secret radar development and anti-aircraft firing.

The RAF Regiment finally left Doniford Camp in 1957. In 1989 it donated the plaque to the town at a ceremony attended by former Watchet councillors – Tony Knight and Eileen Woods – who were both at the rededication.
