The British Red Cross is calling on people across Somerset to come forward and volunteer to help vital services in their communities.
The charity is recruit 'Independent Living Service Volunteers' who they say are needed to support patients upon leaving hospital. These volunteers would help with activities such as essential shopping, picking up prescriptions, or even making sure a person's heating is turned on.
Volunteers are also wanted to help transport patients to their essential oncology appointments across the county, which can be a challenge for people living alone or for those with mobility issues.
Gemma Wood, British Red Cross Service Coordinator for Independent Living in Somerset, said:
“We have a real need for more people to come forward to help us run our vital services. Our volunteers make a huge difference to people in the South West who are living in crisis and desperately need support, whether that’s helping people adjust to being at home after a long stay in hospital or supporting them to get to essential medical appointments.
“Volunteering with us is a win-win. Not only do you get to help your local community, but you can also get an enormous amount of fulfilment from it too. Whatever your background, if you have some time to spare, you should consider volunteering with our amazing, kind and inclusive team.”
Applicants will need to be able to volunteer regularly, and must be at least 18 years old. To apply for the Transport Support Volunteer role and find out more, click here.
