MINEHEAD will remember its key role in wartime defence 80 years ago on Saturday, August 17, when a special convoy of veteran military vehicles hosted by Exmoor National Park, converges on what was a top secret radar station on North Hill.
The convoy, to be manned by military re-creation enthusiasts, will leave the Old Hospital at 10.30 am.
The celebration is free to attend but donations to CareMoor for Exmoor are welcomed.
In World War Two, North Hill was closed to civilians and became one of country's five new tank training ranges for British, American, and Canadian troops.
It also contained a secret radar station, one of 244 across the country and part of a coastal defensive chain to identify shipping and low flying aircraft.
Displays and guided walks around the site will allow residents and visitors to learn about little- known aspects of the town’s military past.
