A VITAL piece of life-saving equipment remains in service, thanks to joint efforts from community leaders.
Public access to a defibrillator will remain in service indefinitely at the Minehead Community Centre, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Minehead Community Defib Group and Minehead Town Council.
The defibrillator, initially installed in 2021 through an agreement with South Western Ambulance Service Trust (SWAST) was set to be removed in mid-September when its manufacturer's warranty expired.
The ambulance service indicated they would no longer be able to offer professional support or maintenance for the equipment.
However, recognising the critical importance of this device, which has been used six times since its installation, the town council sought a solution to keep it in place.
Minehead Town Council agreed to take ownership of the unit, with SWAST willing to gift it to the community. To ensure ongoing professional support, the Council partnered with the Minehead Community Defib Group.
Formed on May 7, 2021, the Minehead Community Defib Group has already placed a total of 20 lifesaving 24/7 public access defibrillators throughout the Minehead area. The group has offered to adopt this unit, assuming responsibility for its maintenance and ensuring it remains in usable condition.
Richard Newton, from the Minehead Community Defib Group, said: "The Minehead Community Defib Group is delighted to be able to adopt this public access defibrillator, to ensure it stays 'emergency ready' for the local community and visitors to the area."
Minehead Mayor Councillor Craig Palmer added: "This collaboration between the town council and the Minehead Community Defib Group exemplifies the spirit of our community. By working together, we've ensured that this vital piece of equipment remains available to potentially save lives. It's a testament to Minehead's commitment to the safety and well-being of both our residents and visitors."
This initiative underscores the importance of community-driven efforts in maintaining crucial emergency services and equipment. The continued availability of this defibrillator at the Minehead Community Centre will provide peace of mind and potentially life-saving support to the local community and visitors alike.
