WATCHET traders and helpers took to the streets for the first of a series of major clean-ups planned to make the town look more attractive.
Ten volunteers, aided by three young helpers, polished shop windows in Swain Street, swept up litter and weeded pavements.
The spring-cleaning programme is part of a campaign to attract more visitors after the closure of the B3191 at Cleeve Hill has reduced the tourist footfall by 60-70 per cent.
Traders are also being encouraged to brighten their shops with bunting and hanging baskets.
“Everyone worked hard, but the children probably worked hardest,” said Tracy Clarke, one of the group who organised the spring clean.
“We thought it was time Watchet’s street’s got pampered and the day’s work made a real difference, particularly to the entrance to the town.”
