Roxy Towells, whose initial drawing was the inspiration for the design of the structure, and Josh Crockford, whose £100 donation raised from a sponsored run helped organisers reach the estimated £18,000 cost of the memorial, took a trip to see the stonemasons commissioned to produce it.
They were in a party of trustees and supporters of the Watchet Remembrance Project Group on the visit to Wells Cathedral Stonemasons in Cheddar.
And the group's archivist Sara Summers said everyone had found it difficult to contain their excitement.
"The stonemasons are doing a fantastic job," she said.
"They are so talented and the detail they are adding is truly amazing.
"We owe them a debt of gratitude for the quality of work they are producing and for bringing our visions alive."
The memorial, which will be sited on land close to Watchet's library and the St Decuman pebble mosaic just off The Esplanade, will be built of Portland stone and will incorporate a cross with a celtic knotwork circle.
It will be inscribed with the names of the 56 men who lost their lives in both world wars.
"It will be a one -off," said Sara.
"Roxy was able to make her mark, as was Josh - both children have been instrumental in our project and will be the future custodians of the memorial.
"We are sure that all the people who have donated to the project will be really pleased when they see the result."
The memorial is due to be unveiled in a special ceremony on June 28 to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One.
The final public meeting outlining the details of the day's events will take place in Watchet Methodist schoolroom on Tuesday (March 4) at 7.30pm.
"Anyone interested in helping on the day or just interested in finding out what will be happening is welcome to attend," said Sara.
