ON Sunday, members of the Watchet and Williton Scout Groups met by the Watchet War Memorial before parading to the West Quay by the Sea Scouts water activity centre, as part of the national St George’s Day celebrations. The parade was led by town crier David Milton.
Across the country scout groups paraded to pay homage to the patron saint of England and the patron saint of scouting. The founder of scouting, Lord Robert Baden Powell, had chosen St George because of the values he demonstrated and by which all scouts are encouraged to live by.
Those taking part in the celebration this year included squirrels, beaver scouts, cubs, scouts, sea scouts and explorer scouts. During the afternoon leaders of each group renewed their scout promises.
The Reverend Jane Sperring, from the Methodist Church, conducted a short outdoor service with a sermon and prayers, before a series of awards and badges were presented to many of the assembled young people on parade.
