SIR — A big thank you to the Exford residents who gave up their time on Sunday afternoon (March 20) to help with the litter picking around the village.  The parish council initiated the event, and it was tremendous to see 15 villagers (both young and a bit older!) turn out to assist with this year’s litter pick.

Even though the last litter pick was less than a year ago, the team collected much more litter this time. On a charitable interpretation this could be because the litter pickers were extra diligent - conversely, it could be that some people just care less about keeping Exmoor tidy for the residents and the many visitors who come here each year. It is quite remarkable what some people discard on the highways – cans, bottles, crisp packets, coffee cups, sweet wrappers, silage wrap and car parts in the main.

Special praise must go to young Patrick, who was especially diligent and found a discarded handbag – with credit cards and personal possessions.  Efforts are being made to repatriate this with its owner.  Well spotted Patrick.

All those who joined our team this Sunday felt a real pride in their efforts.  We do hope this encourages other parishes across Exmoor and even visitors to help in this effort to keep the moor tidy – we are after all very fortunate to look at this beautiful landscape each day.

Finally, a request from us all – please take your litter home.

Jeremy Hickman,

Exford Parish Council.
