BROMPTON Regis has more signposts than any other parish on Exmoor and Kingsbrompton YFC members have been busy cleaning them on behalf of the parish council.
Somerset is one of the last counties to have retained the original, traditional, cast iron signposts. Counties elsewhere have changed to aluminium and other materials.
But the county council no longer keeps up the maintenance of signposts, because of limited funds and more pressing needs.
Kingsbrompton YFC’s cleaning project aims to help preserve the signposts for many more years – and to provide an opportunity for the Young Farmers to get involved in the local cultural heritage, working closely with the parish council and engaging young members of the community.
Working in teams, 13 members tackled 12 signposts in an evening and has more lined up.
And now Kingsbrompton YFC has been selected by the National Federation of Young Farmers for the Countryside Challenge.
The federation has 644 clubs and more than 25,000 members.
In December the federation received funding from the Cabinet Office and Pears Foundation to progress its work in youth social action.
The federation is supporting only five community projects per quarter until summer 2017.
