WITHOUT any kind of build-up to the new season because of the bad weather, Minehead crashed to a ten-wicket away defeat against Yeovil in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League where awaiting them was a damp surface following heavy rain in the days leading up to the game. A delayed start eventually resulted in a coin toss at 1:30, where returning captain Dan Bowditch called heads with the coin landing tails side up, which saw Yeovil skipper Dan Ewens having no hesitation in bowling first, looking to take full advantage of bowler friendly conditions.  Andrew Stevens and Gregg Howard began well for the Pirates, with Howard taking two boundaries in the third over from Yeovil’s overseas star Zwahi Brighton.  A mix up followed shortly after though, as Stevens called for an ambitious second run which saw him run out with the score on 14. A collapse of epic proportions followed, as Howard, Ian Buchanan, Bowditch, Jonah Hopkins and Ellis Taylor all came and went by the time the score had reached 21.  Resistance from Darren Sherring and Charlie Payne followed, but Yeovil didn’t take their foot off the gas as Sherring unluckily chopped on to his stumps for an entertaining 19, before Gary Bennett and Harry Tudball also struggled to come to terms with the conditions and departed for single figure scores. Payne’s 45-ball stay came to an end just one ball after the drinks break, and with that so did the Minehead innings - all out for a miserly 57.  In reply, Minehead went into the second half with more hope than genuine belief, but aimed to put pressure on the Yeovil batters by taking early wickets.  But it was not to be. Yeovil’s opening pair of Ford and Chacko cemented Minehead’s disappointing day as they cruised to the target in just five overs.  Credit must go to Yeovil who played a near perfect game, bowling tight lines and holding all of their catches, before blowing away the Pirates with the bat.  A day to forget for the somewhat underprepared Pirates, who will look to take away some learnings from one of their heaviest defeats in recent history, and leave behind the mistakes made by bouncing back against Wembdon at home on Saturday.  The game gets underway at 12pm, where all support will be especially welcome.  Win, lose or draw - there will be a big night of entertainment as The Mighty Rough Justice perform at close of play, from 7pm til late.  The A XI are also in action on the day, hosting Fitzhead CC on what promises to be a great day and night for all at the MCC.
