MINEHEAD Men’s Hockey Club held their End of Season Awards evening on the 19th April at the Britannia Inn, Alcombe.

Celebrating the highs and lows of what everyone at the Club agreed was an extremely enjoyable season all round. Awards were handed out to Claude Mahlich as 1st Team Player of the Season, Lawrence Taylor for the Seconds, and Scott Fewings for the Thirds. Top goalscorer John Clegg was absent, as was Under-18 of the Year Joe Sealby, winning the Turner Memorial Trophy.

Clubman of the Year was a well-deserved Paul Jones for his long service as 2nd team captain and the hard work that has gone with it.

The Club Committee Cup went to a deserving Dom Bowden for the work he does on Socials and Charity Fund raising, which came in at over £700 for the season. The most improved player Award went to season debutant Ben Druitt, also absent, and the Club’s Ancient Mariner Trophy went to a deserved Chris Briggs.

The Collins Cup, awarded by Club President Mark Collins for his pick of the stand-out club member on and off the pitch went to the 3rd Team super-duo of Briggs and Will Giles for the amazing work in finding and recruiting players for the Third team.

New Committee members were voted in at the AGM by the club held last week, with new first team captain James Weetch and vice-captain Claude Mahlich stepping up; Joe Bolton takes the helm for the ’s, and Honorary Life Memberships given to Club Legends Mark Swallow for all his incredible work as a player, Chairman, and most recently umpire, and outgoing Club Stalwart Nick Hill for his twenty or so years at the Club as player and committee member as he heads to a new adventure at Isca Club in Exeter.

New Coach Andrew Speed has offered mini Summer mixed hockey training sessions, details of which will appear on Social Media, and will be training both the Men’s and Ladies Teams next season as the men first team slide down their Table, and the Ladies embark on a new campaign in a higher League having won promotion this season.

It has been a very mixed season for both the ladies and men’s teams during the winter and, hopefully, the men will be able to improve on their results in the coming campaign.
