PORLOCK First XI hosted Wagtail Athletic, from Yeovil, in the first round of the Junior County Cup on Saturday.
Both sides, having won their opening five matches started tentatively, but after 20 minutes Porlock started to take a stronger foothold in the game and created a few half chances.
Soon after Porlock did make the breakthrough when centre back Chris James played a glorious ball out wide right to Dan Crooks, who found the returning Cody Truscott on the edge of the box whose powerful low strike was saved.
The keeper only managed to parry it to Chris Barrett who made no mistake.
Wagtail responded strongly and climbed back into the game. They threatened on several occasions but were thwarted by ‘keeper Darren Sherring and some brave tackles by the defenders to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
After the restart the game started to get a bit more heated.
The game ebbed and flowed and became scrappy with neither side taking command.
On the hour mark Porlock doubled their lead, when following a long throw from keeper Sherring to Crooks the ball was passed to front man Barrett, who drilled a low cross into the box where the busy Ollie Morris put his diving header in between the keeper’s legs.
Being 2-0 down the visitors threw more numbers forward, which the Porlock defence dealt with well.
However on 70 minutes Wagtail worked the ball into the box and were awarded a penalty after Chris James was adjudged to have brought down one of the forwards.
The referee deemed that James had made no attempt to play the ball and was given a straight red card.
The Wagtail forward stepped up to take the penalty but was unable to convert as Sherring produced a good save with his trailing left leg.
The opponents however kept on coming boosted by the sending off and not long after did get their goal when some neat build up play found their striker who drilled a low half volley into the bottom corner.
Porlock could now sense that the opposition had their tails up but with 10 minutes to play the home defence stood strong and their opponents were unable to equalise thanks to a fantastic defensive team effort.
In the dying minutes a Wagtail player was sent off for an off the ball incident which saw both teams ending with 10 men.
Porlock manager Jay Horne said: “This was a great team effort from the Robins who were missing several key players.
“They got the result that they deserved and all credit must go to those who stepped up to the plate.”
This coming Saturday the Robins host top of the table Galmington.
