WATCHET Town collected three 3 badly needed points when a much-improved performance all-round brought them a deserved 4-2 win away to Somerton Town in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League.
On a ground where they have never fared well, the Red & Blacks sailed into a 4-0 lead going down the slope with less than half an hour played before penalties near the end of each half gave the home side a more respectable scoreline.
The visitors moved the ball around swiftly and confidently from the outset with Mikey Bailey making a tidy return in midfield and they took an early lead when Olly Prescott's corner found Charley Clausen rising to head goalwards where a defender's clearance off the goalline only succeeded in striking a teammate before looping into the net for an own goal.
It was the piece of good fortune Watchet have been craving and they doubled their advantage when a raking diagonal pass from Charley Clausen released Prescott to cut inside his full back to shoot and when the keeper spilled the ball Billy Jones was on hand to turn it home.
An injury to Aerron Clausen forced his retirement, but Watchet continued the momentum and when Prescott again found space near the byeline he managed to squeeze an angled shot inside the far upright to make it 3-0.
Substitute Kieran Bailey was twice in the firing line as he was first unable to get out of the way of an on-target drive from Alfie Lyons and then the follow-up attempt. A free kick from Jay Darrell caused more mayhem in the home defence as an attempted headed clearance brought a flying save from the keeper only for Billy Jones to be in the right place to add a fourth.
Stung into a response the bigger home outfit caused issues with a whole series of corners leading up to the interval and when the referee spotted a pushing offence Brown reduced the deficit from the penalty spot.
Watchet expected to come under serious pressure after the break, but with Josh Aspey keeping dangerman Brown quiet, Charley Clausen dominant in the air, Darrell making interceptions and Eben Harding mopping up, keeper Vinnie Jones was well-protected.
The visitors were still dangerous going up the gradient with Brandon Walsh forging forward from midfield and Billy Jones always a nuisance. Twice Prescott was narrowly off-target after moving inside from the flank to try his luck before home substitutions saw them threatening.
Watchet threw bodies on the line when necessary to block attempts on their goal and their resolve was tested further near the end when what seemed to be a fair tackle was adjudged otherwise by the official and Brown was given the opportunity to complete his brace with a carbon copy of his first penalty kick.
On this occasion, however, the Red & Blacks were in no mood to surrender their lead as they held on for the win which became even more important on learning that Worle had also been victorious.
