WATCHET Town play at Chard on Saturday, April 5, in their last match of the season knowing victory will be secure their place in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League next season.

Watchet beat fellow strugglers Worle 3-1 at home last Saturday and go into Saturday’s game with a four-point cushion above the relegation zone. Only Worle, of the bottom three teams, can now move above Watchet and their two remaining matches later this month are both away - against Timsbury United and Nailsea United.

“Worle are quite capable of winning at Timsbury but their game against Nailsea is much tougher,” said Watchet club spokesman Nick Sully.

“But it’s very much in our hands - if we win at Chard we’re safe. We hope to field a near full-strength side. But won’t be quite as strong as last week.”

Watchet will be looking to avenge a 1-0 home defeat by Chard earlier this season - in a match in which they missed a penalty.

Looking back on the win over Worle, Sully added: “We scored a couple of goals early on which always helps - and we were 3-0 up at half time. They had a ‘goal’ disallowed at 2-0 which might have made a difference if it had counted. I don’t think they were too happy."

Watchet have won only seven league games this season with fielding a settled side being their biggest problem.

Meanwhile Minehead, who still have six matches to play, have slipped to tenth in the first division after their home game against Keynsham Town Reserves was abandoned last weekend following a serious ankle injury to new goalkeeper Michael Palmer. They have no fixture on Saturday and their next game is away to Wrington Redhill who are lying fourth in the table, on Saturday, April 12.
