THE Seniors Section at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club have enjoyed a busy week and despite the at times inclement weather the members have taken part in several competitions.

First of all, many congratulations must got to Edward Frewin on winning the C2 Trophy, a matchplay competition which started in April and continued throughout the summer. Edward overcame Roger Read 6 & 4 in the final played this week, so a very well done to both players.

On Monday, Minehead Seniors played a four ball Texas Scramble in conditions that in truth were more suited to waterfowl than golfers. The early starters held an advantage as the heavens opened during the morning and so it proved.

In first place with a score of 56 were the first group out, comprising Martin Hole, Graham Troman, Kevin Garner and Sandy Lyons. Runners up and three behind with 59 were Dave Oatridge, Roger Read, Richard Austwick and Edward Frewin while in third place with a score of 60 were Peter Young, Nigel Trevelyan, Pete Heddercott and Peter Taylor.

On Wednesday the Seniors played their final friendly match of the year when they hosted Weston-super-Mare in another rain soaked round. On this occasion home advantage certainly paid off as Minehead ran out winners by 5.5 to 0.5

Concluding the Seniors week, a multiplier competition was played on Friday. This format is renowned for making best friends on one hole and then your worst enemy on the next. A brutal format equaling the conditions meant that there was plenty of opportunity to send the ball across thee Bristol Channel towards Cardiff or miss a two-foot putt.

The winning team of Martin Hole, Roger Green and Fraser Lawrence magnificently managed to defy the conditions with a score of 67 points. Second with 61 were Mark Ruttley, Rob Poirrier and Graham Troman while third on count back with 59 points were Dave Oatridge, Doug Hayhoe and Pete Heddercott.

Meanwhile the prestigious Presidents Trophy, a club betterball competition was played on Saturday and attracted a large entry.

Thankfully the competition was played in much improved weather conditions and this was reflected in the scoring with the majority of pairings achieving par or better.

At the end of the competition the winners of the Presidents Trophy were Michael Bohan andDaniel Richardson with a superb nett 62 which included an impressive 10 pars and two birdies. In second place with a 63 were Doug Hayhoe and Peter Young while a nett 64 achieved by Andrew Hill and Chris Peters resulted in them claiming third spot.

It ended a week of poor weather which did not dampen the spirits of the senior golfers at Minehead.
