MINEHEAD & West Somerset Golf Cluib Seniors commenced the golfing week with a 4BBB competition.

At long last a sense of spring prevailed.

In what proved to be a very close contest, the winners on countback with 42 points were John Burrow and Nigel Trevelyan, just ahead of Graham Smith and Steve Woodbury.

Third place, again on countback with 41 points, were Graham Troman and Paul Thompson.

Dodging the showers on Friday, the Seniors played a Stableford from the white, yellow and red tees respectively.

Always a challenge to play from different parts of the course and so it proved for some.

Steve Burns had no such problems coming in with 42 points to claim a decisive first place.

In second with 37 points was Andy Hodgson with Mike Kelly taking third on 36 points.

One of the delights of Seniors’ Golf is that occasionally an event happens whereby a member achieves a personal goal, something quite unique to them which of course fires the enthusiasm for the next round and well beyond.

Last week, Bob Dainty, a young slip of an octogenarian, drove the 18th green in a friendly, something to celebrate as that was a first in itself; the distance to the edge of the green being approximately 170 yards.

Bob then proceeded to putt out the remaining 35 yards or so for a two.

It just goes to show what a wonderful game of golf is and what it does for your wellbeing.

Bob of course was straight into the clubhouse celebrating with a glass of his favourite Merlot and very well deserved too.
