MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors started their week on Monday morning with a Stableford competition. This was played in strong gusty winds, with wet fairways, conditions that proved challenging to all, a fact which was reflected in the scoring.
Despite the conditions Nigel Moore played the round of the day, taking first place with 35 points. Nigel’s nearest opponents were Martin Hole and Paul Thompson who both returned to the clubhouse with 31 points. Following countback, however, it was Martin who claimed second spot, just edging ahead of Paul.
The second Stableford of four scheduled over the next two weeks was played on Wednesday and with a lot of surface water following the previous night’s heavy rain, the front nine proved particularly difficult.
Once again the conditions were reflected in the scoring with first place going to Mark Ruttley with 35 points. Sandy Lyons was second with 34 points and John Burrow third on count back with 32.
The culmination of the Trafalgar Tankard (Round 6) was played on Friday. Realistically, four pairs had a chance to win but it did not stop a full entry participating and thoroughly enjoying in the excellent golfing conditions.
The winners of the final round were Doug Hayhoe and Peter Young with a magnificent 44 points, five ahead of second placed Paul Saunders and Andy Hodgson with 39 points. Third with 38 points were Martin Hole and Bob Arthington.
As for the coveted Tankard, two pairs held top position based on the best four aggregate scores. Therefore, Paul Saunders and Andy Hodgson will play Dave Oatridge and Roger Green in a playoff next week.
Similarly, there will also be a third-place playoff on the same day between the pairings of Martin Hole and Bob Arthington and Dave Ball and Trevor Stephens.
