MINEHEAD will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to four matches under Craig Carr when they play away to Burnham on Sea in Division One of the Uhlsport Somerset County League on Saturday (April 27), writes Barry Knott.
Carr included three teenagers in his starting line-up in the 2-2 draw away to Peasedown Miners Welfare - and brought on Lewis Goodrum and Sam Jackson during the game. Minehead finished the match strongly and thoroughly deserved their point.
However, Minehead go into Saturday’s game knowing they cannot finish any higher than 11th in the table. With nothing to lose, Carr can continue his policy of including youngsters as the season draws to a close.
Minehead will not end their season until Saturday, May 11, when they play away to Yatton & Cleeve who could still pip Watchet Town for the runners-up spot. Watchet, however, have been informed by the league they will be promoted even if they should finish third.
Reflecting on Watchet's 3-1 defeat in the title fight at Staplegrove on Saturday, club spokesman Nick Sully said: "We were not at it in the first half and we were punished for defensive mistakes.
"We managed to pull a goal back before half time. In the second half we missed chances which could have made it interesting.
"And we also felt at 1-0 down we had a stonewall penalty turned down. It may have changed the course of the game.
"I think all the players can be proud of the way they have played this season. Finishing runners-up was never in our thoughts at the start of the season.
He added: "But fair play to Staplegrove. They have been up there all season and are a good side."
Meanwhile Watchet have no match on Saturday but play away to Ashcott the following Saturday in their last league match. If they win they should finish runners-up to the Grove.
Considering Watchet were only looking to 'consolidate' this season, the side has more than exceeded expectations and Saturday's defeat by Grove was their first in 16 games.
It is something Watchet can build on for next season although they know that it is going to be much tougher in the Premier Division. But they have been there before and know what to expect.
Porlock are in action on Saturday when they play at home to North Petherton in the Premier Division of the Taunton Saturday League.
Exmoor Rangers end their season in Division One with a home game against Bridgwater Sports, who have only one more point than their rivals, both sides having played the same number of games.
In the second division Alcombe Rovers entertain North Petherton Reserves while Minehead Colts are home to Bridgwater & Albion Reserves.
