THERE was an abundance of spectacular action at the annual Banger Bonanza fixture at Smeatharpe Stadium, despite the wintry conditions in the Blackdown Hills.
Much of the heavy crashing came in the 2 Litre National Bangers class as typified by former World Champion Terry Hill of Newton Poppleford. Hill claimed the Winter Open Championship, and having taken the chequered flag to seal victory, he celebrated in style by piling heavily into Jai Simmons of Teignmouth.
In the 2 Litre National Bangers race, Jared Roe of Teignmouth despatched Lewis Senford of St Austell, and in the subsequent post-meeting online poll, Roe was voted as the day’s Best Entertainer.
Cornish star Matt Brewer swept to a comprehensive victory in the Supreme Championship for Bangers. Brewer, the 2023 Points Championship winner, swiftly hit the front, decisively charging his way past the early leader Scott Kendall of St Dennis. Ruthlessly, Brewer cut his way through groups of backmarkers, to build up a huge lead, and by the end of the race he was comfortably clear of Phil Chapman of Redruth and Liam Shipway of Taunton, who finished as second and third respectively.
Track debutant Louis Tompkins enjoyed a first visit to Smeatharpe, as he notched two race wins, including the meeting final for Bangers.
