SOMERSET are through to the final of the Metro Bank One Day Cup after beating Leicestershire by 23 runs at Taunton on Sunday (Aug 18).

A career best of 115 not out from Lewis Goldsworthy enabled Somerset to score 334 for four while the visitors were limited to 311 for nine.

Asked to bat George Thomas and Andy Umeed put on 91 before Thomas was out for 47. Umeed went onto make 57 off 76 balls with seven fours which saw Somerset 120 for two in the 27th over.

James Rew joined Goldsworthy and Rew brought up the 200 with a single in the 39th over. Rew went to his half century and together with Goldsworthy added 131 for the third wicket before he was caught on the boundary for 71 off 57 balls which included 10 fours.

Sean Dickson joined Goldsworthy who went to a thoroughly deserved century off 79 balls. After adding 52 in four overs Dickson perished for 18 which saw Ben Green blast an unbeaten 17. Goldsworthy’s unbeaten 115 came off 86 balls with six fours and five sixes.

When Leicestershire responded they moved onto 54 before Josh Davey had Sol Budinger caught for 33. With the total on 96 Green had Lewis Hill caught by Thomas at deep mid wicket for 19.

Green struck again shortly after when he bowled Ian Holland for 40 which made the visitors 101 for three in the 19th over. Five runs later Green claimed the wicket of Ajinkya Rahan and at the halfway stage the visitors had reached 126 for four.

Peter Handscomb and Ben Cox took advantage of some loose bowling; the former saw up the 200 with a six over mid wicket in the 35th over, shorty after which the 100 partnership came up off 13.4 overs.

A couple of good overs from Aldridge and Davey reined the visitors in and with 10 overs remaining Leicestershire needed 99 runs to win with six wickets left.

Aldridge had Cox caught by Rew for 49 and suddenly the momentum swung back to Somerset.

Leach came back into the attack with with his second ball had Kimber caught at long on. Aldridge claimed the wicket of new batter Liam Travaskis which made Leicestershire 245 for seven.

Handscomb continued to gather runs and went to his century with a boundary off the second ball of the 45th over. All the while he was still in the middle the game was in the balance but when Davey had Handscomb caught by Umeed for 111 it was virtually all over.

Green ended with 3-63 from his 10 overs, while Aldridge took 2-41 and Davey 2-54.

Somerset face Glamorgan in the final at Trent Bridge on Sunday, September 22.
