T'S ALL systems go at Wiveliscombe Rugby Club who open the new season in Western Counties (West) with a home match against Penryn on Saturday, September 7 (kick off 3pm.).

Looking ahead to the first game head coach Rob Weaver said: “The mood in the camp is very positive and everyone is keen to get the season underway. There’s a great buzz among the players; we are getting good numbers at training and are nearly always in the low 30s and everyone is buying into what we are doing. The lads are definitely putting the effort in buying into it.”

So far the Wivey pre-season has gone well and they have enjoyed victories against North Petherton and South Molton while the Seconds had a good win against Chard who are a league above them.

“Things are looking very positive and we are all just looking towards getting back out on the pitch and start the new season," added Weaver.

“Penryn are a side who we know will be tough, it’s never an easy game against them, but the big positive for us is that this is the first time we have played them at home early season.”

The head coach mentioned some of the key players in the Wivey squad.

“We have got Tom Pearce who is a new to the area; a fly half/centre come full back who is looking very tidy. We have got scrum half Richard Baker who has been outstanding for us over the last couple of seasons. We have also got our dominant front row of Will Ellis, Matt Ellis and Tom Stone who we know we can forge the back around.

“This year we also have a number of youngsters who have come through out of the Colts who are now in their early 20s who are making their presence felt. We have also got a few lads who are back from university on gap years or half gap years who are also likely to feature.

“So it’s all very positive at the moment so we are just going to start the new season off on Saturday with a win to start the momentum rolling.”

Last season Wivey struggled to get going and were dogged with injuries, but then had a run of seven wins on the bounce that started just before Christmas which turned around the season.

“They were the only games that we had a full strength squad out and we won all seven. However then we got decimated by injuries again and just hung on at the end to stay where we were.”

Rob added: “However we get going once again on Saturday and everything at Wivey is looking really positive and we can't wait to get going.”
