CHANGES to recruitment procedures have been introduced by Butlin’s following a revelation that a convicted paedophile was employed in its Minehead holiday resort after he lied on his job application form.
Former water polo and rugby coach Dean Carelse, aged 43, worked as a swimming pool lifeguard in the Minehead resort for 10 months.
He was quickly sacked by Butlin’s after the company was made aware of his background by Australian broadcaster ABC News, which tracked Carelse to Minehead.
South African national Carelse was jailed two years ago in Australia for nearly 20 offences, including grooming a 13-year-old boy and possessing more than 2,000 child exploitation images and indecent recordings of children at a swimming pool.
The crimes were committed while he worked as a private school teacher in the late 2010s when the court heard he would use his mobile phone to make indecent recordings of children in swimwear.
He was deported to South Africa last year after being released from prison and was not subject to any restrictions on his movements.
Butlin’s said it had recognised the seriousness of the situation and swiftly conducted an inquiry which led to Carelse being dismissed with immediate effect.
The company followed Government guidance and carried out an enhanced DBS check which cleared Carelse to work for it.
A Butlin’s spokesperson told the Free Press: “The team member falsified information on their application, and we can confirm they no longer work for us.
“In addition, there have been no complaints or issues raised against them.
“Due to the severity of this, we have reviewed our policy and can confirm additional checks for existing international team and future international applicants will be carried out.”
