A ‘REMARKABLE’ achievement was being celebrated in Minehead this week after the town won a coveted gold award in the 2024 South West in Bloom competition.
It was a significant improvement on last year’s silver gilt award in the Sargent Trophy category as Minehead distinguished itself as one of only three entries in its division to achieve gold status.
The only other towns in Somerset to to be awarded gold in the 60th anniversary year of the Britain in Bloom competition were Yeovil and Glastonbury.
The Royal Horticultural Society-led competition evaluates towns based on their floral displays, open spaces, and environmental approaches, with particular emphasis on community involvement.
The Sargent Trophy is for ‘outstanding effort and dedication’ by a main competition entry which on judging day comes across the best in all areas of the judging criteria.
Bloom judge Camilla Bassett-Smith carried out a comprehensive assessment of Minehead’s achievements when she visited during the summer, taking in spectacular floral displays throughout the streets to the town’s pristine Blenheim Gardens.
The evaluation also highlighted Minehead’s commitment to environmental sustainability through its rewilding initiatives.
Minehead Mayor Cllr Craig Palmer said he was proud of this year’s community achievement.
Cllr Palmer said: “What makes Minehead truly special is the incredible community spirit shown by our volunteers and local groups.
“While we have always known how dedicated our community is, it is wonderful to receive this formal recognition of their efforts.
“Together with the hardworking ground staff of both Somerset Council and Minehead Town Council, they have helped showcase what makes our town such a wonderful place to live and visit.
“This gold award is a testament to the community spirit that has always been at the heart of Minehead.”
The award represents the highest possible certification in the prestigious bloom competition, building on Minehead’s rich history in the initiative.
Cllr Palmer said the council was now looking to expand its involvement and welcomed interested groups and individuals taking part in future projects.
