CARAVAN owners are being offered help by holiday giant Haven after a power supply fault damaged hundreds of electrical items on their West Somerset site.
The incident happened last month as National Grid was undertaking planned work in Doniford Bay Holiday Park while it was closed to guests and caravan owners.
The work saw the power supply cut off and temporarily moved on to a generator, during which time the fault occurred and affected plugged in electrical devices in caravans and some areas of the park’s complex.
Haven, which is part of Bourne Leisure Ltd, the UK’s largest privately-owned holiday operator, said staff were helping owners with repairs and replacements, regardless of whether they were covered by their own or the company’s insurance.
A Haven spokesperson said: “Local work being undertaken by a third party caused disruption to power, resulting in damage to appliances in a number of caravans and areas of the park.
“All impacted caravan owners have been informed and advised regarding insurance claims.
“We appreciate this has affected a number of our owners and we are on hand to guide and support them to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
However, one affected customer, Sharon Burr, said some owners had been left ‘stuck between a rock and hard place’ because their own insurers were telling them to claim off the company’s insurance, while Haven had told them individual claims should be made if they wanted the repairs carried out quickly.
Ms Burr said it seemed a power surge had caused the damage and left many appliances in need of replacement.
She said she was disappointed with ‘sparse, contradictory, and incomplete’ advice coming from the staff on site.
Ms Burr said: “Individual owners been misled and hoodwinked over the whole situation, and left high and dry.”
