FORMER Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford has joined the board of the Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA).
Mr Shelford, who was an Army officer for 32 years, said he was ‘immensely proud and enthusiastic’ about his new role.
He said: “This is not just a personal milestone, but an exciting opportunity to actively support the vital work being carried out by our reservists, cadets, veterans, and the wider Armed Forces community that supports them.
“I am deeply committed to advancing initiatives that reflect the values of the association and serve the people of Somerset and beyond.”
Mr Shelford said he would be visiting cadet units, reserve bases, veterans’ breakfast clubs, and employer networks across Somerset to listen to their needs, understand the challenges, and work collaboratively to create solutions which benefited the entire community.
He said: “I have witnessed the challenges veterans face, especially those navigating the criminal justice system.
“I am committed to ensuring veterans have access to the support they need, from mental health services to housing assistance.
“A key initiative close to my heart is the Prisoners Building Homes Programme, which offers artisan training and qualifications for veterans.
“One of the programme’s graduates has gone on to become a site foreman for a major developer, earning £65,000 annually, showcasing the transformative power of such initiatives.
“A core priority of my role will be bridging the gap between reservists, their employers, and potential employers.
“Somerset is God’s own county.
“Together, we can continue to uphold that sentiment by empowering our youth, supporting our veterans, and championing the cause of those who serve.
“I look forward to meeting as many as possible and working together to build a stronger, safer, and more inclusive Somerset.”
