A GROUP of ‘fat lads’ working on the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station construction site are taking on a 100-mile cycle challenge to support a West Somerset cancer charity cause.

Ian Barrow and some of his co-worker are entering the CARTEN100 challenge to ride from Cardiff to Tenby, South Wales.

They have so far raised £437 toward their target of £1,000 which will go to the family-run Marion Evered Trust children’s cancer charity.

The Marion Evered Trust gave a cheque for £15,000 in 2024 to the children's unit in Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

The trust since 1974 has been supporting children undergoing cancer treatment in Oak Ward, Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

Last year, it gave £15,000 toward the renovation of a paediatric outpatients garden in which children play.

The cycling Hinkley workers are aged from 24 to 57 years and admit they each have ‘different levels of fitness’ as they look forward to the challenge on May 10.

The Marion Evered Trust, named after a former Free Press village contributor, makes a donation every year to Love Musgrove, the official charity of the hospital, which treats more than 450,000 patients annually through its emergency department, on its wards, and through its outpatient services.

A trust spokesperson said: “We are so lucky to be working with so many wonderful people and cannot wait to support Ian every step of the way.

“All money raised will be added toward the already incredible total that the Marion Evered Trust donate yearly to the children’s ward.”

The hospital is funded by the NHS, but raises extra funds to improve its services, purchase new equipment, and continue to provide a positive environment for both patients and their families.

A Musgrove spokesperson said: “Donations made in support of Love Musgrove have a real and tangible impact on the people of Somerset and beyond.”
