A LICENSING application has been made by Somerset Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (YFC) for its annual county rally being held in West Somerset in May.

The event will take place at Rydon Farm, West Quantoxhead, from May 12 to 14, and the federation wants to be able to sell alcohol and provide late-night refreshment and music until 10 pm on the Friday, midnight on the Saturday, and 2 am on the Sunday.

It is the largest Somerset YFC fund-raising event of the year and up to 900 young farmers are expected to attend from all over the county.

The rally is being organised by the YFC’s West group, which comprises Kingsbrompton, Williton, Wiveliscombe, Cutcombe, and Exmoor, which hosts it every five years.

The rally will open with a stock judging evening on the Friday, see a number of contests on the Saturday such as a calf show, handicrafts, shearing, tractor driving, fence erecting, tug of war, and an assault course, before closing with a large social event.

The headline sponsors for the rally are agricultural machinery dealership Masons Kings, which has a depot in Exebridge, Dulverton, and Wheddon Cross-based Shearwell Data Ltd, which provides livestock identification and management systems.

YFC rally chairman Nick Matravers said the companies were ideal partners with which to work because their services were integral to the day to day job for young farmers.

The rally licensing application is being considered by Somerset West and Taunton Council, which is asking for public comments to be submitted by April 20.

Representations can be made online via the council’s website or by email to [email protected].
