PUPILS of West Somerset College, Minehead, and Court Fields School, Wellington, were among youngsters from across the county and further afield who took part in an annual Rotary public debating competition.
‘Youth Speaks: A Debate’ was held in Taunton School with the Sir John Colfox Academy, from Bridport, winning the senior category, and Kings College, Taunton, the intermediate winners.
Ten teams of three youngsters, comprising a chairman, proposer, and opposer, some as young as 11 years, took part in a district final organised by Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland.
The competition aims to provide young people with the experience of researching and speaking on a public platform as a member of a team about a topic or issue they care about, as well as an opportunity to learn and practice high standards of expression, presentation, and appearance.
A Rotary spokesperson said: “It is so inspiring to see so many talented young speakers excelling in a competitive environment.
“It really is encouraging that competitions like this are still running successfully and proving Rotary can be a real force in improving the futures of young people.
“Young people are so passionate about the issues and topics they care about, and that shone through with their presentations.”
The district winners go on to a cluster final in Bristol next month, from where the winners go to the national final, in Essex.
The contest is part of a programme of nationwide annual competitions for young people aged from 11 to 17 years.
The spokesperson said: “These competitions are a great way for young people to be challenged in a fun and friendly environment.
“Rotary is committed to offering them opportunities to unlock their potential, develop their skills, and broaden their horizons.”
