PEOPLE living in the Minehead area are urged to buy £1 shares in a scheme which aims to fund a new pool and leisure centre to open by 2029.
Minehead Swimming and Leisure (MSL) Limited has launched a community membership scheme in a bid to pay for the development of a new, full-sized indoor public swimming pool which is deemed “important” for the town.
MSL formed in 2020 and consulted with residents on plans for a new pool, but it is now at a stage where it’s inviting residents to join them to show support for the project, receive updates on progress, and come to member meetings where they can participate in decision making.
The Societies’ chairman, Peter Wellstood, said: “The need for a pool here in Minehead is, we believe, very important for youngsters to have the chance to swim safely; also the elderly to help keep themselves mobile, and all ages in between.
“The Bristol Channel is not always the safest place to swim, with strong tides and sometimes not very clean water; hence the need for an indoor pool 12 months of the year.
“The building will be in-keeping with the surrounding area and we will plan from the outset for sustainable energy usage. The pool will have easy access for people with mobility problems.
“We also hope to offer space for physio work and parents with smaller children to help gain confidence in the water. It can also be used by schools, clubs and of course you, the community.”
MSL is a Community Benefit Society being run as a co-operative, so when people buy one, or more than one share (worth £1 each), they become a member and a shareholder.
People can buy as many shares as they like but every member gets one vote. This is to stop anyone having a controlling interest just because they can afford to buy many shares.
The value of a single share never changes; it will always be worth £1. MSL will use this money to fund the work needed to move the project forward. Work is ongoing to choose a site for the new facility, as well as consultations, business planning, building partnerships and fundraising.
Residents can find out more about the work so far and download an application form from its website: www.mineheadswim.org where updates will also be posted.
The society has a Facebook group (which is named Minehead Swimming & Leisure) where people can leave their thoughts on the project.
Mr Wellstood added: “This is a public group and anyone, whether they are a member or not, is welcome to join.
“We hope to be organising some information points around Minehead in the coming weeks, where people can meet those involved in person, and discuss the project.
“Keep an eye on our social media for updates on this. We can’t wait to move forward with your support.”
